MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - It came down to the final at-bat with the go-ahead run at the plate, but the Middle Tennessee softball team (20-27) fell just short, 4-2, against a solid Chattanooga squad Tuesday evening at Blue Raider Softball Field.
Starters: Cor'Nisha Birdsong (CF), Alma Cortez (LF), Carlie Jenkins (1B), Morgan Harris (C), Samantha Nieves (3B), Megan Griffith (DP), Kristin Uselton (3B), Austyn Whaley (2B), Kiarra Freeman (RF), Caitlin McClure (P)
Birdsong and Cortez both went 2-for-4 with Birdsong recording a double. Griffith registered a double and the team's lone RBI of the contest. Nieves and Harris tallied doubles with Jenkins and Freeman notching singles.
McClure suffered the loss to fall to 5-7 on the year despite a solid outing in 3.2 innings of work. The Lilburn, Ga., native surrendered three runs on four hits. Sophomore Megan Chocallo pitched the final 3.1 innings of relief to allow a three hits and a run.
Despite outhitting UTC (31-11) 9-7 in the contest and getting runners on base to score, MT went just 1-for-15 when threatening to come home.
Trailing 4-2 in the final inning, Cortez led off with a single to right field followed by another single from Jenkins to left field that put two on with no outs and the Mocs back on their heels.
With one down, Nieves hit into a fielder's choice that put runners on the corners after the runner advancing to second was thrown out. Griffith was the go-ahead run at the plate, but the Mocs forced a pop up to right field to secure the win.
A pitcher's duel ensued in the first three innings as both teams combined for just three hits. Chattanooga would stop that trend in the top of the fourth with three runs on four hits, and all with two outs.
MT responded in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap to two, 3-1. Nieves led off the frame with a double right field before an RBI double to right center by Griffith brought in the senior to score. Griffith later advanced to third with one down, but MT couldn't advance her home
In the ensuing frame, the Blue Raiders cut the lead to one, 3-2 after a fielding error brought in Birdsong to score with Jenkins at the dish. Birdsong led off the inning with a two-bagger and advanced to third on a groundout.
Later in the inning, Middle Tennessee had runners at the corners and an opportunity to tie the game, but the Mocs forced the final out. The Mocs earned an insurance run in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead back to two, 4-2, before the final inning.
Jesslyn Stockard led the visitors with two RBIs, while Cricket Blanco and Sarah Beth Roberts both hit solo shots. Cori Jennings recorded the win for the visitors inside the circle, and Kailey Palazzolo registered the save.
MT will play in its final road game of the season tomorrow at 6 p.m., at Tiger Field against Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders dealt TSU a 4-0 shutout earlier this season at Blue Raider Softball Field.
