MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – One last week of competition is scheduled for the Middle Tennessee track & field teams before the Conference USA Championships (May 14-17) as the distance runners will compete at Oregon State Friday with the remaining Blue Raiders at the Tennessee Challenge Saturday.
Much like earlier in the season at the Raleigh Relays, Middle Tennessee will take advantage of tough competition to increase personal-best times for their distance squad.
Hillary Rono and Shadrack Matelong will represent the men's squad in Corvallis, Oregon at the Whyte Track & Field Center with Rono scheduled to compete in the 1,500 meter and Matelong in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
For the women, Hannah Maina, Jackline Kiprono and Gladys David are scheduled to compete in the 5,000 meter. Rhema Cheruiyot and Josphine Kiptebeny, who is the Middle Tennessee 3,000-meter steeplechase record holder, are slated to compete in the 3K steeplechase.
Among the remaining Blue Raiders that are competing Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn., at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium are reigning Conference USA Male Field Athlete of the Week John Ampomah.
Ampomah earned his fourth C-USA honor of the season after tossing the javelin a NCAA best 81.55 meters (267' 6") at the Penn Relays. The Accra, Ghana native also earned victory in the event.
Also coming off solid performances from last week's competition are Geoffry Akena, Nigel Jones and Qetuwrah Abdullah-Muhammad.
Akena captured victory in the 400 meter at the Bellarmine Classic (49.70), while Jones produced the same result in the long jump (6.50m/21' 4.00").
Abdullah-Muhammad also earned victory in the women's long jump with her 5.48-meter performance (17' 11.75").
Competition for this weekend is scheduled to start Friday at the OSU High Performance Meet and concluded Saturday at the Tennessee Challenge.
