MT rallies past WKU, 5-4; Remains in first
MURFREESBORO – The Comeback Kids were at it again Friday night.
Sophomore right fielder Brad Jarreau's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth lifted Middle Tennessee to a 5-4 win against rival WKU in front of a national television audience on Fox Sports here at Reese Smith Field.
It was the Blue Raiders' seventh win in their final at-bat and kept Middle Tennessee (26-20, 16-6) atop the C-USA standings. Austin Bryant led Middle Tennessee at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort. Jake Ingold (2-for-3, HR, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI) and Kevin Dupree (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games for the Blue Raiders. Middle Tennessee pounded out 12 hits and all but one starter had at least one base knock.
While Jarreau came through in the clutch at the plate, it was senior pitcher Johnathan Frebis who was clutch throughout. Frebis (5-5) earned the win with another stellar effort. The lefty set the Blue Raider record for most career starts by a pitcher with 56, besting the previous mark of 55 set by Chris Norton (1985-88).
Frebis pitched a career-high eight innings and tied his career high for strikeouts with eight.
Jarreau's two-out base knock provided the Blue Raiders with the lead and enabled Frebis an opportunity to earn the win; however, it was truly Frebis' gutsy effort that gave Middle Tennessee a chance to capture the victory.
Frebis stymied the Hilltoppers (23-21, 9-13) over the final 3-2/3 innings he worked. The southpaw didn't allow a hit or baserunner after giving up a one-out hit in the fifth. He retired 11 straight batters to end his evening after the top of the fifth.
"I was a little more pumped tonight playing against WKU," Frebis said. "It's a big rivalry and this was a big game for us. We battled and competed and found a way to win."
Frebis and the Blue Raiders turned the game over to senior righty Kooper Kessler with the 5-4 lead going to the ninth. Kessler didn't disappoint. He struck out the size to earn his fifth save and help give Middle Tennessee a leg up in the series.
The Blue Raiders trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the eighth when they came off the deck in dramatic fashion.
Ingold started the uprising with a colossal home run off of the football stadium in left field. He was the first of three Blue Raiders to reach to open the inning. Bryant collected his third hit of the game and Dupree followed with another. Dupree was able to move to second on a throwing error by the WKU centerfielder, putting runners at second and third with none out.
The promising inning started to look bleak when the next two batters collected outs without the tying run scoring; however, Jarreau stepped to the plate and drove an opposite-field single into right center to score both run and provide a 5-4 lead and set the stage for Kessler.
Middle Tennessee once again came off the deck after falling behind early.
WKU led 3-0 after 3-1/2 innings before Middle Tennessee finally broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth.
Jared Allen started the inning with a leadoff triple, his second of the season, and scored on a wild pitch as the Blue Raiders cut the deficit to 3-1. WKU got the run back in the top of the fifth to go up 4-1.
Middle Tennessee had its best chance for a big inning in the bottom of the sixth when Ingold and Bryant started the frame with back-to-back singles. They moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch, providing the Blue Raiders with runners at second and third and none out.
What started as a promising inning fizzled as Middle Tennessee settled for just one run when Ingold scored on Kaleb King's ground out to pull Middle Tennessee within 4-2.
Dustin Delgado had a strong evening, going 1-for-3 with two walks.
Middle Tennessee will look to win the series when it sends righty Nate Hoffmann to the mound for Saturday's 4 p.m. start at Reese Smith Jr., Field.
