MT drops 9-7 decision to UTSA
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Starting pitching was expected to set the tone in the C-USA Championship opener between No. 4 Middle Tennessee and No. 5 UTSA at Pete Taylor Park here Wednesday.
Instead, the two evenly-matched teams combined for 16 runs and 27 hits in an offensive uprising that saw UTSA escape with a 9-7 win against the Blue Raiders in the double-elimination tournament.
Middle Tennessee (30-26) has proven to be resilient all season but now the Blue Raiders have their backs to the wall in the biggest way as they face elimination. They will face either No. 1 seed Rice or No. 8 seed FIU Wednesday at 9 a.m. Junior right-hander Nate Hoffmann will get the start on the mound.
"It was unfortunate, but this team will continue to battle," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "We just have to pitch better. We had opportunities. I felt good when we got the early lead but we just couldn't build on it."
Offense was not a problem as the Blue Raiders pounded out 12 hits and scored seven runs. Newcomer of the Year Ronnie Jebavy led the way with a 4-for-5 performance, including a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Jebavy was one of three Blue Raiders with multi-hit games.
Brad Jarreau continued his solid sophomore season with a 2-for-5 effort that included two runs scored, and second baseman Dustin Delgado was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and he drew a walk. Outfielder Jared Allen as 1-for-3 and drove in three runs, and Jake Ingold was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Kevin Dupree contributed a RBI double, and Austin Bryant was 1-for-4 with one run scored.
The issue was stopping UTSA (33-23).
The Roadrunners pounded out 15 hits, including three home runs and a double. Every starter had at least one hit and five had multi-hit games, led by catcher John Bormann's 3-for-4 effort.
Middle Tennessee had its greatest success against UTSA starter Brock Hartson in three career starts. The Blue Raiders collected eight hits in five innings against Hartson, while scoring five runs, all earned.
Blue Raider senior starter Johnathan Frebis also pitched into the fifth inning and actually had better numbers than Hartson. He allowed six hits and four runs, three earned, in 4-1/3 innings of work.
"Both starters struggled, uncharacteristically," McGuire said. "The heat and throwing all those innings during the year catches up to you a little bit. We just could not get them shut down. We went to the bullpen and they opened the lead up on us. We kept battling and fighting back, but we couldn't get over the hump."
Middle Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the second when Bryant collected a one-out single and scored on Dupree's double. UTSA came back and tied it with one run in the top of the third but the Blue Raiders came right back in the bottom of the frame.
Jarreau led off the inning with a double, and Delgado walked to put runners at first and second. Jebavy's first of four straight hits drove in Jarreau, and Allen followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Delgado and give Middle Tennessee a 3-1 advantage.
UTSA scored one in the fourth and then turned the game with four in the top of the fifth against three different Blue Raider pitchers. Frebis started the inning before giving way to Blake Stansberry, who last one-third of an inning and allowed four hits and two runs, both earned. Sam Alton followed Stansberry. Alton gave up two runs on solo home runs in his 2-1/3 innings of work.
Even after the four-spot that provided a 6-3 lead, Middle Tennessee came right back with two in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within 6-5 when Allen and Ingold drove in Jarreau and Jebavy.
Two solo home runs in the top of the sixth pushed the lead back to 8-5 for UTSA.
"We got ourselves in position when it was 6-5," McGuire said. "We gave up three solo home runs out of the bullpen. That ends up being the difference in the ball game."
Middle Tennessee had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh, trailing 8-5, and was on the verge of getting right back in the game but relief pitcher Logan Onda got Bryant to ground into an inning-ending double play.
The Blue Raiders gave UTSA a finish in the ninth but couldn't complete the comeback. With one out, Delgado and Jebavy collected back-to-back hits. Allen doubled to left to score Delgado and Ingold came to the plate representing the tying run. He hit a sac fly to center as Middle Tennessee pulled to within 9-7, but it could get no closer.
