MT wins 6-5, falls 4-3
SAN ANTONIO – Close games have been the norm for Middle Tennessee baseball and winning one-run games has been habit forming.
The Blue Raiders settled for a split in two one-run games at UTSA Saturday, winning game one of the doubleheader, 6-5, before dropping the nightcap, 4-3. Middle Tennessee is 12-3 in one-game games this season.
Middle Tennessee (29-22, 19-8) fell one-half game behind Rice in the C-USA standings by virtue of the doubleheader split. If Rice drops its series finale at Florida Atlantic the two teams will go into the final weekend tied for the C-USA lead. Should Rice complete the sweep of Florida Atlantic Sunday it would take a one-game lead into the final weekend.
"It is tough to sweep doubleheaders, especially two nine-inning games," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "Our guys really battled today and had a chance to win both games. You saw two evenly-matched teams battle and the result was two one-run games."
Sophomore right fielder Brad Jarreau had a stellar series and capped it off with strong doubleheader. Jarreau was 6-for-11 in the twinbill and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He was 4-for-6 in the first game and 2-for-5 in the nightcap.
Jared Allen (4-for-9, 2 runs, double), Kevin Dupree (2-for-5, double, 2 runs scored) and Ronnie Jebavy (3-for-10, home run, double, 3 RBI) also had multi-hit games for the Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee wasted no time jumping out to an early lead in the first game of the doubleheader. The Blue Raiders struck for three in the top of the inning highlighted by Jebavy's sixth home run of the season.
Jarreau started the game with a sharp single to center to extend his hitting streak to nine games. With one out, Jebavy stepped to the plate and unloaded on a 1-1 offering, driving it 390 feet over the wall in left center to stake the Blue Raiders to a 2-0 lead. It was Jebavy's second home run in as many at-bats going back to Friday night.
Kaleb King later drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jared Allen, who had singled, to stake the Blue Raiders to a 3-0 lead. UTSA came right back with a two-spot in the bottom of the inning to pull to within 3-2.
UTSA eventually tied it in the bottom of the sixth, but Middle Tennessee scored single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth to earn the win. Allen delivered a leadoff double and eventually scored on a wild pitch with two outs as the Blue Raiders went on top 4-3.
Jarreau led off the eighth inning with a single and scored on Jebavy's opposite field double to give the Blue Raiders a 5-3 advantage. After UTSA closed to within one with a run in the bottom of the eighth, Middle Tennessee answered when Dupree provided a one-out single and came around to score on Jarreau's clutch two-out single.
Blake Stansberry (5-1) earned the victory in relief of starter Nate Hoffmann, who provided 5-2/3 innings and allowed three runs, two earned. Hoffmann didn't allow a run after the first inning and left with the lead. Stansberry pitched 1-1/3 innings of one-hit, shutout ball before giving way to Kessler, who pitched the final two innings to earn his sixth save.
Tyler Troutt gave the Blue Raiders another quality start in game two. Troutt went 5-2/3 innings, scattered seven hits and allowed one run. He left the game with a 2-1 advantage but the bullpen couldn't protect the lead.
Middle Tennessee went on top 2-0 with two in the top of the fifth but the Blue Raiders missed an opportunity to do more damage. Austin Bryant started the frame with a single and moved to third on Dupree's double. Bryant scored on Michael Adkins' groundout and Kevin Sullivan followed with a sharp single down the first base line to plate Dupree.
The Blue Raiders had the bases loaded with one out and threatened to break the game open, but Jebavy grounded out and Allen popped out. UTSA pulled to within 2-1 in the sixth and went on top 4-2 with three in the seventh.
Middle Tennessee gave the Roadrunners (30-21, 15-12) a finish. They scored one in the eighth with some two-out magic. Sullivan walked with two out to start the rally and moved to third on Jarreau's single. Delgado's base hit scored Sullivan and brought Jebavy to the plate with a chance to tie the game but his grounder to third ended the inning.
The Blue Raiders went down in order in the ninth.
Middle Tennessee returns home for four games to close the regular season beginning with Tuesday's contest against Belmont. The Blue Raiders will play host to Southern Miss in the regular-season finale next weekend.
