MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Seven Blue Raider pitchers scattered five hits and Middle Tennessee (30-22) used a four-run sixth inning to secure a 5-2 win against Belmont in front of 823 at Reese Smith Jr., Field Tuesday night.
Nathan Foriest (3-0), the fourth of Middle Tennessee's pitchers, earned the win with a perfect inning of work in the sixth. During one stretch, Blue Raider hurlers Sam Alton, Will Small and Foriest retired 10 straight Bruins.
Kevin Dupree was the only Blue Raider with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Brad Jarreau was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. He extended his hit streak to a season-high 11 games.
Dustin Delgado was 1-for-2 with one run, Jared Allen was 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI, and Ronnie Jebavy was 1-for-4 with one run. Jake Ingold added two RBI.
With a short week due to the final series beginning Thursday, Blue Raider skipper Jim McGuire opted to keep his pitchers on a pitch count while trying to get as many arms into the game to get work as possible.
Garrett Ring started and pitched two innings of one-hit ball. Sam Alton worked two innings of perfect relief before giving way to Will Small for one inning and Foriest for one inning. Small and Foriest worked perfect innings. Blake Stansberry, Kooper Kessler and Heath Slatton also worked one inning each.
The Blue Raiders were hitless through five but they broke up the no-hitter and shutout in the bottom of the sixth. After Jarreau and Delgado walked to start the inning, Jebavy singled to left to load the bases with no outs. Allen followed with the Blue Raiders' second straight base hit, a single to left that scored Jarreau with the game's first run.
Delgado motored home from third on a wild pitch to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead before Ingold and Austin Bryant delivered sacrifice flies to complete a four-run inning that provided the Blue Raiders a 4-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders kept it going in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Jarreau extended his hitting streak to 11 games and Delgado followed with a single to put runners at first and second. After Jebavy popped out, Allen walked to load the bases and Ingold followed with a walk to push Jarreau across the plate for a 5-0 Middle Tennessee lead.
Belmont (26-25) would add one run in the eighth and one in the ninth but Slatton closed the door on the comeback bid and shortstop Bryant and second baseman Kevin Sullivan teamed to turn the 56th double play of the season to end the game.
The Blue Raiders will close out the regular season with a crucial three-game series against Southern Miss this weekend. Game one of the series is Thursday at 6 p.m.
