Blue Raiders slated to play two Friday
The Golden Eagles (32-16-1, 17-10) won their 11th straight and left Middle Tennessee (30-23, 19-9) needing one win to clinch the No. 2 seed for the C-USA Tournament.
Michael Adkins led Middle Tennessee at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and one run scored. Jared Allen also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Brad Jarreau was 1-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Middle Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jarreau singled and moved to second on a groundout and was still there with two outs when Allen delivered a clutch two-out single to plate the game's first run.
Starter Johnathan Frebis was dealing through the early innings and the Blue Raiders maintained their 1-0 cushion until the top of the fifth. That's when the Golden Eagles came off the deck for five runs and chased Frebis from the game. Blake Stansberry pitched three shutout innings to keep Middle Tennessee in the game before Southern Miss got to him in the ninth.
The Blue Raiders scratched out a run in the bottom of the fifth to close the deficit to 5-2 but they could have had more. Kevin Dupree started the inning with a leadoff walk and Kaleb King followed with a sharp single. Adkins delivered a single and when the ball was misplayed in centerfield, Dupree came in to score. After three straight reached to start the inning, Jarreau struck out looking and Dustin Delgado grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
Middle Tennessee looked as though it was going to do some damage in the bottom of the sixth after Ronnie Jebavy singled and Allen followed with a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third.
Southern Miss starter Cody Carroll stepped up and struck out Jake Ingold and Austin Bryant to keep the runners at second and third. Dupree drilled a shot to center but right at Connor Barron for the third out in the inning and the Blue Raiders missed a great scoring opportunity.
Middle Tennessee kept chipping away and put up a two-spot in the bottom of the seventh. King was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Carroll was removed from the game in favor of Jake Winston. Adkins smoked a Winston pitch into left field for a double to put runners at second and third with no outs. Jarreau grounded to second, enabling King to score and Adkins to move to third. Delgado followed with a deep fly ball to center for a sacrifice fly as the Blue Raiders pulled to within 5-4.
The Blue Raider bullpen was outstanding in the middle and late innings but it gave up seven runs in the ninth as Southern Miss collected some insurance. By the time the dust had settled the Golden Eagles owned a comfortable 12-4 lead.
Middle Tennessee will play a doubleheader against Southern Miss Friday with game one slated for 2 p.m. Tickets are $2.
