MT moves to 2-0 in C-USA play with win over UAB
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Emily Jorgenson and Angie Lai both scored and the Middle Tennessee State soccer team moved to 2-0 in C-USA play with a, 2-1, win at UAB on Sunday afternoon.
"It's always good to get a win on the road, especially within the conference," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "I think we played well as a team and we were able to capitalize on the opportunities that we created. Overall, I was very pleased with the team's effort."
After the MT attack peppered the UAB goalkeeper, Jorgenson finally broke through for her team-leading third goal of the year when she connected with a loose ball at the 27' mark. The play was set up by a corner kick from Courtney Gibson.
Another corner kick, this one by Morgan Mauck, allowed Lai to net her first of the year in the second half. At that point, MT (6-3-1, 2-0 C-USA) was up 2-0 with 32 minutes to play.
However, UAB (1-8, 0-2 C-USA) would not go away as Bri Kuestersteffen notched her first score of the season by heading a corner from teammate Katherine Foster at the 64' mark.
The Blazers had a few more opportunities during the remainder of the game, but each of their two shots went wide of the posts.
MT was the more aggressive team on Sunday, earning a 16-10 shot advantage in the match. Eleven of the Blue Raiders' chances occurred in the first half.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer was tested early, but she rose to the challenge to make four saves in the first 25 minutes. She finished the game with six stops and only one goal allowed.
The Blue Raiders will next take the pitch at Old Dominion on Oct. 2. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
