MT defeats Charlotte, 1-0, at home on Sunday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A goal by Kerri Cook in the 82' proved to be the difference as the Middle Tennessee soccer team defeated Charlotte, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
"We knew Charlotte was going to be a strong opponent and they definitely were," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "I think it was a very balanced game and we just happened to take care of the opportunity that we got."
After 12 shots that did not find the target, the Blue Raiders (7-3-1, 3-0 C-USA) finally broke through when Cook drove a chance into the back of the net with only a handful of minutes left on the clock.
The chance was set up by a corner kick from Tori Hawkins. The cross into the box was a good one and Cook fired a ball right into the Charlotte (5-7, 1-2 C-USA) goalkeeper's outstretched arms. The ricochet went back to Hawkins who dished it off to Cook. This time, Cook's shot was true for the game-winner.
Hawkins was a thorn in the 49ers' sides all day. The senior tallied five shots, one on goal, and took over half of MT's eight corner kicks.
MT keeper Kelsey Brouwer notched yet another shutout, her sixth of the season, and tallied seven saves. None was bigger than one of Charlotte's last-minute chances which bounced off of a MT defender. Brouwer was barely able to get a fingertip on the ball, forcing it wide to preserve the win.
With the victory, MT moves to 3-0 in C-USA for the first time in school history.
The Blue Raiders will look to go 4-0 in league play when they host WKU on Oct.9. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
