MT Moves to 4-0 in C-USA Play
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Morgan Mauck scored the first goal of her career and Tori Hawkins added one more for good measure, as the Middle Tennessee soccer team defeated Western Kentucky, 2-0, at home on a soggy Friday night.
"The fan support was awesome, and anytime you can win a conference match and get a shutout it is a plus," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "I think [the rain] slowed the game down for both teams, but both teams managed the surface fairly well."
There was no slowing down the Blue Raiders who are now 4-0 in C-USA play, 8-3-1 overall.
Mauck gave MT a, 1-0, lead after she flicked on a ball from just outside the box in the 28'. The play was set up by a pretty pass by Grace Summers which was her first assist of the season.
The opening strike was one of few bright spots for the Blue Raider offense in the first half as they were outshot 8-6 in the opening frame.
The same could not be said about goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer who notched four saves in the first 45 minutes to preserve her seventh shutout of the year.
The Lady Hilltoppers (6-4-3, 2-2-1 C-USA) came out firing in the early goings in the second stanza, but again, Brouwer was able to weather the storm and keep WKU off of the board.
MT played conservatively the rest of the night, picking and choosing when to make runs. The strategy worked as Jessica Steen found herself all alone just outside of the box, but made a wise decision to dump the ball to Hawkins who had a better angle. The fleet-footed Hawkins beat her mark and one-timed the pass into the back of the net.
The strike provided all of the insurance that MT would need in continuing the best start to C-USA play in school history.
The Blue Raiders will go for their fifth-straight win on Sunday when they host Marshall at 2 p.m. for the conclusion of "Pink Weekend".
