Hawkins and Mauck had goals for MT
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Tori Hawkins and Morgan Mauck each had goals for the second straight game, but the Middle Tennessee soccer team fell to Marshall, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.
"I think we started off slowly and against a team like Marshall, that's never going to get you the result you need," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "But I was really proud of the second half effort that we gave and the fight that we showed."
The Thundering Herd (10-2-3, 3-1-2 C-USA) started quickly as MU's Jordan Parkhurst deposited a ball into the back of the net in only the second minute of the game. The shot came off of a perfectly crossed pass by Sydney Arnold.
The Blue Raiders (8-4-1, 4-1-0 C-USA) immediately responded with a goal of their own in the ninth minute. Goal keeper Kelsey Brouwer booted the ball up field and Hawkins dribbled past the defense to find an open shot and the equalizer.
Brouwer recorded six saves in the first half, but she failed to stop a shot in the 32nd minute by Ashley Seltzer. Seltzer drilled a ball into the top-right corner from well outside the box to gibe MU a, 2-1, advantage.
Marshall outshot MT, 17-4, in the opening period and did not slow down in the second.
With only three minutes gone in the second stanza, Erin Simmons put the Herd on the board again after she was left unmarked following a free kick by Jenna Dubs. The strike marked the first time that MT had given up three goals in a game this season.
In danger of losing their first home match of the year, the Blue Raiders engineered a scoring chance when Mauck outran a defender and had a one-on-one with the goalie. The keeper saved the first, but the ball rolled off of her hands and into the foot of Mauck who promptly sent it into the net.
Marshall played keep-away for the last seven minutes of the match to help preserve the win.
MU tallied 29 shots for the game while MT managed nine. Hawkins was Middle Tennessee's main threat, finishing with three chances, two on goal.
The Blue Raiders will look to rebound when they travel to Texas this upcoming weekend for games at North Texas (Oct. 16) and Rice (Oct. 18).
