Tori Hawkins nets goal in third consecutive game
DENTON, Texas – In a battle between the two top teams in C-USA, the Middle Tennessee soccer team narrowly fell at North Texas, 2-1, on Friday night.
"We gave up two goals on corners but I think outside of that we played a very solid game," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "We allowed a very strong team in North Texas a couple of pretty easy goals, but overall I was pleased with effort and character of our team for the majority of the game."
The Blue Raiders (8-5-1, 4-2-0 C-USA) entered the match trailing the Mean Green (13-2-1, 5-0-1 C-USA) by one point in the standings, but are now four points behind following an NT offensive attack that featured 23 chances.
MT's Tori Hawkins had six shots on the night and scored a goal for the third straight match in the game's 44th minute. Defender Kathy Thomas was credited with the assist after Hawkins headed Thomas's high cross into the net.
Unfortunately, MT was down by two before Hawkins's goal as NT had scored in the 14th minute following a pass into the box and again at 28:01 from the left wing.
Middle Tennessee goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer registered six saves on the night, five in the first period.
Freshman Morgan Mauck had another fine game for MT, tallying six shots, four on target, and playing the entire 90 minutes.
In fact, Middle Tennessee only used two subs on the night and Mauck was one of eight Blue Raiders to not come off the pitch. Brianna Jasenack and Jessica Steen were the only palyers to make an appearance off of the bench for MT.
Together, Mauck and Hawkins combined for nine of MT's 11 shots on goal.
The Blue Raiders will try to snap a two-game losing streak when they play at Rice on Sunday at 1 p.m.
