Kelsey Brouwer Made 13 Saves at Rice
HOUSTON, Texas – Kelsey Brouwer had a season-best 13 saves, but the Middle Tennessee soccer team was forced to settle for a, 0-0, tie at Rice on Sunday.
"Rice is a strong opponent and I think we showed a lot of character in today's match," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "Playing an early Sunday match on the road is never easy, especially against an opponent like Rice. We did well in keeping their potent offense in check and creating opportunities of our own, but we just didn't convert."
Rice was averaging 1.87 goals per game coming into Sunday, but Brouwer was sensational throughout the afternoon in recording her eighth shutout of the season. She stopped six shots in each of the two periods in regulation and then was asked to make one more save in the first overtime before the Blue Raider shut the door in the final stanza.
Rice (9-5-2, 5-2-1 C-USA) peppered Brouwer and the MT defense all game and ended with 26 shots. The Owls' Holly Hargreaves was the main attacker, leading her club with six chances.
The Blue Raiders finished with 13 shots through the 110 minutes, four on goal. Kerri Cook, Morgan Mauck, Tori Hawkins and Grace Summers paced Middle Tennessee (8-5-2, 4-2-1 C-USA) with two strikes each.
Rhoden was more liberal with his bench on the second game of the Texas road-trip as Jessica Steen, Brianna Jasenak, Sally Gill and Abbie Brown all earned valuable playing time.
Sunday's match was the first scoreless tie for MT since Aug. 30, 2013 when Lipscomb and the Blue Raiders were both kept off of the scoreboard.
The Blue Raiders will return to Murfreesboro to take on Louisiana Tech on Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. The match will be the final home game for MT's nine seniors.
