MT Defeated UTSA, 79-71, on Saturday Afternoon
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee men's basketball team overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to win its second consecutive C-USA game over UTSA, 79-71, on Saturday afternoon.
Giddy Potts had a game-high 26 points and Darnell Harris (15), Perrin Buford (14) and Reggie Upshaw (13) each scored in double-digits for the Blue Raiders (10-5, 2-1 C-USA).
The Middle Tennessee defense showed up when it had to and did not allow UTSA (3-14, 1-3 C-USA) to score for the final 4:17 of the game. The unit also came away with 11 steals and held the Roadrunners to a 44 shooting percentage from the field.
Potts had 18 points in the first half and his second three-pointer of the game tied the score at 19 apiece at the 8:05 mark.
Following Potts's triple, the Roadrunners used a 12-2 run to race out to a nine-point lead with only four minutes left in the first half. MT was just 1-of-4 from the floor during the stretch and had three turnovers.
UTSA headed into halftime on top, 42-34, thanks to strong shooting from the charity stripe (19-of-20) and by turning nine MT turnovers into 16 points.
The Blue Raiders came out of halftime firing and canned three of their first four shots from beyond the arc. Despite the barrage from deep, MT still trailed, 45-43, with just over two minutes gone in the second stanza.
The Raiders continued to chip-away at the Roadrunner lead and a layup from Upshaw with 5:34 to go put his team in front, 71-64, and capped off a 19-7 MT run.
UTSA got within one with under two minutes to play, but the MT defense did not allow another point en route to the eight-point win.
Following the two-game home stand, the Blue Raiders will travel to Charlotte for a game against the 49ers on Jan. 14. Tip-off for MT's fourth conference game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
