LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Blue Raider men's cross country team remains perfect on the season after placing second only to Division II opponent Grand Valley State, while the women's team finished 18th at the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday morning in Louisville, Ky.
For the second straight meet and just the second race of his career, freshman Jacob Choge finished second overall, this week with a time of 23:37.23 in the 8k. The first year runner improved upon his impressive 24:03.7 time in the Commodore Classic 8k two weeks ago.
Choge finished just two seconds behind first place finisher and one of the nation's top runners in Edwin Kibichiy from Louisville.
Sophomore Kigen Chemadi was the second Blue Raider to finish, placing 14th with a time of 24:19.08. Newcomer Sampson Laari ran well, finishing 18th with a time of 24:28.31, while junior Amos Cheruiyot finished 32nd at 24:42.43. The second place finish has associate head coach Keith Vroman excited about the championship season coming up.
"Another amazing day for the men's team," Vroman stated. "It takes smart racing to win championships, Amos Cheruiyot and Jacob Choge ran smart today, and executed our game plan perfectly."
The team finished with 100 points, 18 points off Grand Valley State and ahead of SEC foes Tennessee and Auburn. Middle Tennessee also placed ahead of ACC opponents Louisville and Virginia Tech.
On the women's side senior Hannah Maina continues her outstanding season placing 33rd with a time of 17:32.2 in the 5k.
"Hannah Maina had a great performance today and continues to improve this season," Vroman stated. "It's great to have her senior leadership out there."
Middle Tennessee is slated to return to competition Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.for the UTC Front Runner Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn.
