MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After a brief break in competition in the fall season, Middle Tennessee's women's tennis is set to host the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Ohio Valley Regional at the Adams Tennis Complex this Thursday through Monday.
"We to take advantage of every opportunity we have to show off our facility," MT women's tennis head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "It's one of the nicest in the country. It's a perfect setup for an event like this where we could play indoors or outdoors. It's awesome to share this level of tennis with our community."
All eight student-athletes from Ramsay's squad will participate in the event, including freshman Lidia Burrows, who will be making her debut as a Blue Raider.
Costanza Magazzini leads the team in wins so far this fall, and will bring a 7-2 singles record to the ATC on Thursday. Marta Peris Herrero also holds a winning record in doubles, including a win in the opening round of the USTA Pro Circuit 10K earlier this season.
In doubles, Luisa Zirilli leads the way with an unblemished 3-0 record. Magazzini also leads the team in doubles triumphs with four. Sarah Sediri enters the tournament with an even 3-3 doubles record. Newcomer Maria Josefina Zehnder has a mark of 2-2 in doubles action.
"The progression for our student-athletes this fall has been steady. We need to continue to get tougher and better. We have some girls that are newer to our system, and I think our returners are doing a great job of helping them with the day-to-day routine," Ramsay said.
The ITA's Ohio Valley Region is full of the nation's top teams and individual talent. Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Louisville and Indiana will all be represented in Murfreesboro this weekend, along with WKU, Chattanooga, Memphis and East Tennessee State, among others.
"This is a very strong and deep region," Ramsay added. "The competition is as good as we'll see all season. Many of these teams get to play indoors a lot, so they'll be well practiced for this event."
Admission is free throughout the event, and action will get underway Thursday morning. Visit Tournament Central as well as @MT_WomensTennis on Twitter for updates and information throughout the event.
