MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A sluggish second half performance coupled with a hot-shooting opponent plagued the Blue Raiders, as former OVC foe Tennessee State left Monte Hall Arena with a 74-63 victory Saturday night and handed Middle Tennessee its first setback of the season.
Despite leading for the majority of the contest, the Raiders shot just 7-for-19 from the free throw line and were outrebounded by a 36-25 margin.
"It was easy to see the tougher team won. They beat us in every facet," head coach Kermit Davis said. "You have to give Tennessee State credit. They played good on the road with toughness. They made good plays, made free throws down the stretch and played really well tonight."
JaCorey Williams led Middle Tennessee for the third straight game with 18 points and tied for a team-best six rebounds. Reggie Upshaw added 13 points and pitched in six boards.
Although the Blue Raiders led for the majority of the game, Tennessee State lingered, never trailing by more than seven points.
TSU's Wayne Martin sank a jumper at the 11:36 mark in the second half which sparked a 19-3 Tiger run. A Darreon Reddick three pointer gave TSU its first lead of the night at 47-46, as the Tigers sank seven of eight shots during the run to grow the lead to 59-50.
A free throw by Williams and an Edward Simpson corner three trimmed the deficit to 59-54, but that would be the closest MT could climb in reach of the Tigers for the remainder of the game.
Simpson ended the night with 12 points and shot a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc.
Tennessee State extinguished the threat when Tahjere McCall drove to the basket for a layup, drew contact and completed the old-fashion 3-point play to push the lead to 62-54. Tennessee State drained 12 of its final 14 free throw attempts to put the game away.
Turnovers and fouls also plagued the Raiders late. MT accrued 26 fouls in the game and surrendered six second-half giveaways.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage, which grew to its largest lead of the night at 22-15.
Four free throws from Upshaw and a three pointer from Simpson cushioned the Blue Raider lead to 30-23 before a three-pointer by Armani Chaney and a tip-in at the buzzer cut the lead to 30-28 at the break.
The Tigers were paced by Reed and Martin who recorded 23 and 22 points, respectively. Martin also tallied a game-high 13 rebounds.
TSU sank 13 of 20 shots in the second half for 65 percent, while shooting 51 percent overall.
The Blue Raiders return to action Tuesday against Toledo before Middle Tennessee participates in the Challenge in Music City over Thanksgiving weekend.
