MT shoots lights out in second half to down Eagles
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It was a Mississippi homecoming Saturday night for sophomore Edward Simpson as the Blue Raiders took down Southern Miss 76-54.
Simpson, a native of Ocean Springs, Miss., led Middle Tennessee with a career-high 19 points and went 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Giddy Potts chimed in with 18 points and five 3-pointers of his own while Reggie Upshaw added 15 and Xavier Habersham tied his career-high with nine points on 3-of-4 from three.
Middle Tennessee (18-7, 10-3) shot 49.1 percent on the night and was an astonishing 59.3 percent from three. The Raiders hit a season-high 16 from beyond the arc and held Southern Miss (7-16, 4-8) to 38.6 percent shooting on the night and just 28.6 percent in the second half.
The Blue Raiders got off to a sluggish start in Hattiesburg, spotting Southern Miss nine points before Upshaw got MT on the board.
It wasn't too long before 3-pointers got the Blue Raiders going. Quavius Copeland and Potts hit threes on back-to-back possessions to give Middle its first lead at the 5:47 mark.
Simpson was the bright spot on offense in the first half, going 3-of-4 from three and totaling 11 points going into the locker room with the Golden Eagles ahead by a score of 32-27.
Middle Tennessee came out of the locker room with far more intensity than the first half. A 5-0 run capped by a Simpson free throw tied the game up at 32.
After a Southern Miss 3-pointer, the Raiders went on a 13-0 tear fueled by a couple of threes by Potts and another by Habersham to take a 45-35 lead at the 14:36 mark.
Southern Miss hit another three to bring it back to a seven-point Blue Raider lead, but wouldn't get any closer as Middle Tennessee found its rhythm on both ends of the floor.
The Raiders extended the lead to 21 as Simpson and Habersham hit back-to-back threes with just under six minutes remaining.
Middle Tennessee slowed it down from that point on to run out the clock as they had taken all the momentum in Reed Green Coliseum.
The Blue Raiders return home Sunday for the game of the season in Conference USA. The second place Raiders host the first-place UAB Blazers at 5:00 p.m. in the Murphy Center.
