MT beats Southern Miss in Game 1, drops Game 2
The Raiders offense was good in each game as they plated six runs in each contest and earned six hits and nine hits in the first two games of the weekend respectively.
Carlie Jenkins led the team in the first game as she went 2-for-3 at the plate, scored a run and earned an RBI. Dani Munoz hit her team leading fifth home run as she was 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Kirstyn Cuccia cooled off a little bit but did go 1-for-3 at the plate and scored a run while Deja Portillo and Precious Birdsong each got into the hit column.
The Raiders started game one hot as Munoz hit a three-run homer past the scoreboard into the trees in left center field. Austyn Whaley followed with a walk and Jenkins tripled her home with a shot off the wall in right center and MT was on top early 4-0.
Middle Tennessee's advantage remained the same until the bats got going again in the fourth. With two outs and runners on second and third, Whaley scored when Birdsong singled up the middle. Megan Griffith followed by reaching on an error that allowed Jenkins to score and the Raiders had control up 6-0 after four.
Southern Miss then came alive in the fifth as they scored five runs on the strength of two homers and an RBI double. Samantha Robles led off the inning with a blast to left center. Later in the inning Katie Cleary doubled home Samantha Reynolds and Lauren Holifield finished the inning a three run homer to cut the MT lead to 6-5.
But Kelci Cheney (8-6) settled down to retire the last seven Golden Eagles in order to take home her eighth win of the season as the Raiders held on for a 6-5 win. Cheney earned the complete game victory after allowing five runs on seven hits.
Samantha Robles (8-5) took the loss for Southern Miss as she gave up six runs on six hits and walked two in 6.0 innings of work.
The home team started quickly in the second game as well as Whaley walked and Jenkins was hit by a pitch, both with the bases loaded to give MT a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Southern Miss, however, came right back in the top of the second. Bailey Stokes singled to bring home Holifield and Sarah Evans scored on a Reynolds ground out to tie the score 2-2. Rachel Johnson followed with a base hit to score Stokes and the Golden Eagles had their first lead of the day 3-2.
In the fourth Michelle Stringer hit a two-run bomb to left field that scored Evans and the Southern Miss lead ballooned to 5-2.
The fifth inning saw each team score three times as Holifield hit a three-run round tripper in the top half for the Golden Eagles. In the bottom half Griffith grounded out with the bases loaded to score Randi Cookus, Birdsong followed with a base hit that scored Jenkins, and Portillo singled down the left field line to bring home Uselton. After the high scoring fifth the score was 8-5 Southern Miss.
In the top of the sixth Holifield hit her second homer of the game, this time a two-run shot, and the Golden Eagle lead grew to 10-5.
The bottom of the inning saw Munoz touch-em-all for the second time on the day as she homered to center. Her solo homer cut the Southern Miss lead to 10-6, but that's as close as the Raiders would get.
An RBI single and an RBI double in the seventh gave the Golden Eagles the 12-6 win to earn a split on the first day of conference play.
Megan Chocallo (1-4) took the loss as she allowed eight runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Pattie Taylor allowed four runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
Danielle Block improved her record to 4-3 as she earned the win allowing just two runs on two hits in 3.1 innings of work. Samantha Robles did earn her second save of the season as she pitched the final 2.1 innings and gave up just one run on two hits.
The rubber match of the series is scheduled to take place Sunday at 12 p.m. and admission will be free. With possible weather playing a roll, if a start time change is needed it will be reported on goblueraiders.com and on twitter at @MT_Softball.
