Cheney holds down Tigers as MT wins 3-0
MURFREESBORO – Kelci Cheney dominated Tennessee State (7-21) Tuesday as Middle Tennessee (15-15) picked up a 3-0 shutout win over the Tigers at Blue Raider Softball Field.
Cheney (11-8) earned her 11th win of the season as she kept Tennessee State quiet for 7.0 innings and allowed just four hits and no walks as she struck out three. Cheney also faced just four over the minimum in the game, retiring 21 of the 25 batters who came to the plate.
Middle Tennessee was led at the plate by Carlie Jenkins who went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Dani Munoz, Payton Grove and Austyn Whaley each earned an RBI on the evening as Whaley and Precious Birdsong scored the other two runs.
MT began quickly literally and figuratively. Birdsong led off the bottom of the first with a walk, then stole second and scored on Munoz's base hit for the early 1-0 lead.
Whaley led off the second with her second home run of the season, and three innings later in the fifth Middle Tennessee added more insurance. With two outs Jenkins singled through the right side, then stole second. After a walk to Munoz, Grove singled to center and Jenkins scored the third run of the game and the Raiders had a 3-0 lead.
Cheney was able to shut down the Tigers to earn the victory, at one retiring 10 straight Tennessee State batters.
Middle Tennessee will be on the road again this weekend as they take on the UTSA Roadrunners in San Antonio. The action begins Friday with a double header scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The Raiders are 2-4 in Conference USA play as they enter their third conference series of the season.
