Sophomore Ed Simpson suffers season-ending ankle injury
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On the eve of Conference USA Tournament play the Blue Raiders have been hit by the injury bug once again as sophomore guard Edward Simpson has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a fractured ankle.
Simpson, a key piece for Middle Tennessee who had drawn starts the last three games in place of the injured Giddy Potts, suffered the injury during a practice session Wednesday afternoon in preparation for the Blue Raiders quarterfinal game set for Thursday.
The Ocean Springs, Miss., native was averaging 5.0 points and 2.6 rebounds per contest in his sophomore campaign while leading the Blue Raiders with a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Simpson also served as one of Middle Tennessee's top perimeter defenders.
"Ed really suffered a tough and heartbreaking injury in today's practice on a non-contact play," head coach Kermit Davis said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him."
It was a somber scene as the team surrounded Simpson to comfort him on the floor of the practice arena, but also served as an uplifting moment between him and his teammates showing true compassion amongst the Blue Raiders.
"Our team and our staff love Ed and what he is about and we'll sure miss him," Davis added. "I know Ed will have a full recovery in time and I know our players will be resilient and respond in a very positive way."
Following the injury, Davis gathered the team upon returning to the hotel to update them on Simpson's status and lift the team's spirits.
Simpson has put together several spectacular performances this season, tallying 14 points in the second half to lead Middle Tennessee to a comeback win at Old Dominion (Jan. 16) and totaling a team-best and career-high 19 points at Southern Miss (Feb. 13).
The Blue Raiders lose Simpson just as Potts was set to return in the Conference USA quarterfinals, leaving them down two key players. MT is also still without starting point guard Jacob Ivory for the remainder of the season due to a concussion.
