MT turns back Austin Peay, 6-5
Box Score
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee pounded out a season-high 16 hits and fended off a late Austin Peay rally to secure a 6-5 win at Reese Smith Jr., Field Tuesday.
All but one Blue Raider position player got at least one base knock, and the six-through-nine hitters were a combined 10-for-15 with four runs scored and four RBI.
"We had a good approach to our at-bats, for the most part, and that was great to see," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "We have worked hard on our hitting and it is good to see the positive results. Several different guys had great at-bats and did a good job so that was encouraging. We just need to carry some of the momentum into this weekend's series at Southern Miss."
Drew Huff and Vaughn Shapen – batting sixth and ninth, respectively, were a combined 6-for-7 with three RBI. Huff, a freshman, led the hit parade with a 3-for-3, and Shapen was 3-for-4. They were two of six players in the lineup with multi-hit games for Middle Tennessee (14-15).
"This was a big win for us," Huff said. "We had a good offensive game as far as hitting the baseball. It was good to break out like that at the plate. It wasn't just that we had hits. Coach McGuire has been stressing quality at-bats, moving runners, getting guys in when the situation presents itself. For the most part, we did that tonight."
Austin Dennis (2-for-4, 1 run scored), Brad Jarreau (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run), Austin Sistrunk (2-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Kevin Dupree (2-for-4, 2 runs) also had multi-hit games. Riley Delgado and Aaron Aucker also had base knocks.
Reid Clements (2-1) earned the win in relief of AJ Spencer, who pitched 2-1/3 innings of one-hit baseball with four strikeouts, but had to exit the game with one out in the third due to injury. Clements provided 3-2/3 innings, scattered four hits and allowed just one run. Carson Lester had a strong outing with two innings of no-hit, shutout baseball.
Middle Tennessee took a 3-0 lead in the second and did all of the damage after the first two batters in the inning were out. Huff singled, stole second and scored on Sistrunk's clutch single to give MT a 1-0 lead. Dupree singled to put runners at first and second. After a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet, Shapen ripped the first of three hits into left field for two RBI and a 3-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders extended the lead to 4-0 in the third when Jarreau singled and later scored on Huff's two-out RBI single. Middle Tennessee added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings and secured the victory.
