Raiders score two runs in ninth but drop game one
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A ninth inning Blue Raider rally fell just short in Hattiesburg as Middle Tennessee dropped game one against Southern Miss 6-4 at Pete Taylor Park Friday night.
Four different Blue Raiders recorded multi-hit performances on the night, led by Kevin Dupree's 3-for-4 night that included a double and a home run.
Middle Tennessee had good at-bats most of the night, striking out just once throughout the game.
Reigning Conference USA Pitcher of the Week Nate Hoffmann took the mound for the Blue Raiders and proved to be effective early on.
Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but Hoffmann battled to around the run to end the inning with four strikeouts through first two frames.
Middle Tennessee tied the game back up in the top of the third as Kevin Sullivan darted home after the second baseman dropped the throw from the catcher when Riley Delgado stole second base.
The Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the fourth and then tacked on three more in the fifth, one of which was unearned after a couple of Blue Raider throwing errors kept the inning alive.
Austin Dennis sped around the bases with a line drive triple down the right field line to lead off the sixth before Brad Jarreau drove him in with a ground ball to shortstop, closing the gap to 5-2.
The Raiders threatened in the seventh as a Golden Eagle throwing error put runners on the corners with one out, but USM turned a double play to get out of the inning unscathed.
Hoffmann's day came to an end as Caleb Smith came out of the bullpen to start the eighth. Hoffmann allowed five runs – four of which were earned – through seven innings of work with seven strikeouts and no walks. The senior from Sun Prarie, Wisc., threw 70 strikes in his 95 pitches.
Smith allowed a leadoff double in the eighth but got the next two batters out with ground balls to third base and second base. The Golden Eagles then extended their lead to 6-2 on a single through the left side before the Raiders ended the inning.
Kevin Dupree led off the ninth inning with an opposite field home run, drawing the deficit back to three. With one out Blake Benefield was hit by pitch and Sullivan drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate.
The next Blue Raider batter popped out to right field before Delgado reached on an infield single to load the bases. Dennis then knocked an infield single off the Golden Eagle pitcher to make the score 6-4, but MT couldn't close the gap anymore as USM got a ground ball to end game one.
Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss go at it again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. with lefty Tyler Troutt on the mound for the Blue Raiders.
