MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's soccer team is set to open the 2016 season on Friday as it faces off with Jacksonville State at the Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
MT is coming off preseason matches against Kennesaw State and Martin Methodist that allowed the team to come together. It also served as a time for the younger players to get meaningful minutes on the field before regular season competition begins.
The Blue Raiders return 13 players including six starters from last year's squad.
Seniors Courteney Gibson, Angie Lai, Madison Ledet and Grace Stewart as well as junior midfielder and Preseason All-Conference USA selection Cameron Cox highlight the list of Blue Raider returners. Middle also boasts 12 newcomers that are looking to make an early impact.
Gibson's team-leading four assists from a year ago are a bright spot up top as the Blue Raiders must replace their top four goal scorers from last season.
The defense, however, returns four players, including Kerri Cook and Kathy Thomas, with significant experience from a unit that allowed only 16 goals in 20 matches last season.
JSU comes to town having to replace a big portion of the offense losing its top-two scorers from a season ago. Sophomores Madison Carruthers and Claire Petersen will try to fill the void. Petersen had three goals and an assist last season on her way to being named a member of the Ohio Valley Conference's 2015 All-Newcomer Team. Carruthers had a team-leading three assists last year.
The Gamecocks midfield remains intact with seniors Nicola Dominikovich, Carsen Taylor and Mackenzie Bellows. The three combined for three goals and three assists in the 2015 campaign.
Jacksonville State also returns its top goalkeeper in Caroline Robinson, who started all 19 matches last season. Robinson had 97 saves last year and finished with five shutouts.
