MT closes DISH Tennessee Classic with host Volunteers
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Despite a strong start and two comeback bids, Middle Tennessee dropped its first match of the season with a 3-1 loss to Cincinnati.
Bailey Mason led the offense for the second night, tying her season-high with 12 kills and paced the Raiders with 10 digs. Makila York tallied eight kills, while Jacqueline Lux and Regan Coughlin both added nine digs in the match.
MT set an early pace with an 8-4 lead out of the gate, but UC rallied with a 5-0 run to gain its first lead of the set at 9-8. The Raiders and Bearcats went back and forth, with neither team leading by more than two, until the Raiders took control with a 20-17 advantage. Tied 22-22, a key block Mason and a forced error on set point helped MT finish the set as strong as it began for the 25-22 set win.
Both teams maintained the close play to open the second frame. MT jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Cincinnati rallied offensively to take a 9-7 advantage. The Bearcats continued to build their lead to 16-10 before York broke the run with a pair of kills. Trailing 21-14, the Raiders rallied with three kills from Aubrie Huddleston. Trailing 24-20, a kill by York, an ace by Huddleston and a forced error put the Blue and White back in position, but the late rally was not enough as the Bearcats took set two 25-23 to tie the match.
Cincinnati came out firing to begin the third frame, building an 8-5 lead and hit .455 for the set. Trailing 20-11, MT mustered a brief rally with a pair of kills from Delaney Gallaher, but the early deficit was too much to overcome, as the Bearcats took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-14 win in the third set.
The Bearcats carried the momentum from the set two and three wins into the final set, as UC claimed a quick 13-2 lead. Kills from Coughlin and Dora Peonia slowed the Bearcat offense, but UC forced a pair of errors to finish the match and earn the 3-1 win.
Sophomores Sabrie Sirmones and freshman Breanna Jager saw their first action of season, with Jager tallying two assists and a dig.
MT faces a quick turnaround as they close the DISH Tennessee Classic against the host Volunteers at 6 p.m. CT.
