Match vs. Chattanooga begins at 1 PM
Match Notes
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee men's tennis program, led by head coach Jimmy Borendame, will begin the new season Monday at the Adams Tennis Complex squaring off against Chattanooga at 1 p.m. and Tennessee State at 5 p.m.
Luis Morillo Diaz will begin the season as the No. 113-ranked singles player in Division I college tennis, according to the Jan. 4 ITA rankings, following a 9-1 singles mark in the fall. MT's Jacob Pugh claimed the title of Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Month in November.
"The start of the season is exciting for us as coaches, but especially for the players," MT assistant coach Daniel Leitner said. "All the work they do is to get ready for the matches, so to finally get out there and compete is what everyone has been looking forward to.
"We always focus on attitude and energy in practice," Leitner added. "We want to make good decisions, compete hard, and train hard to be ready for any situation that could come in a match."
Chattanooga's season will start at the ATC for the second season in a row, as the Mocs will try to start the new season off on the right foot after a seventh-place finish in the SoCon in 2016. However, the squad's top singles player from a year ago returns for his senior season, as Lucas Plesky will look to improve on his 12-9 record at the No. 1 spot in the lineup last season.
Head coach Carlos Garcia will begin his 16th season at the helm of the Mocs against the Blue Raiders on Monday. MT has won 19 consecutive matches in the series between the two programs, in which the Blue Raiders have the all-time series lead, 25-10.
Tennessee State will travel to Murfreesboro a much-improved team from a year ago, as they return the team's leader in singles victories last season, redshirt-senior Kyle Burton. Former Ball State transfer Shashank Nautiyal and WKU transfer Matthew Brown are expected to make an impact this season for the Tigers as well.
Monroe Walker III will lead the Tigers for his third season, and he'll look to improve his squad from a 9-14 record and ninth-place finish in the OVC last season. The Tigers have yet to take a team point from the Blue Raiders. MT leads the overall series, 21-0.
Live stream will be available for viewing the match vs. Chattanooga at CUSA.tv/RaiderVision. Live stats will be available for both matches. Free T-shirts and Kellogg's Pop-Tarts will be given out during the match on Monday.
