Magazzini, Burrows win singles flights

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Out of eight flighted tournaments at the Samford Fall Invitational, Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team claimed three flights, the most of any team in the event.
Overall, MT was 4-3 in doubles as a team and 9-3 over the weekend in singles, with Lidia Burrows, Costanza Magazzini and Maria Josefina Zehnder all going undefeated in singles play over the two-day event.
In the third doubles flight, Luisa Zirilli and Marta Peris Herrero won over opponents from Tulane, UAB and Memphis on their way to claiming the Flight C Doubles title. Magazzini and Burrows paired up to win their first round match in Flight B before falling in the second round. Kim Kermet and Zehnder worked together in Flight A but dropped two matches.
In singles action, Burrows earned two wins in Flight D over opponents from South Alabama and Samford to win her flight. In Flight E action, Magazzini claimed three wins to give MT its third flight win of the event. Zehnder was undefeated in two matches in Flight F, but that flight did not have a formal bracket.
Peris won her first round match to advance to the championship match in Flight B but lost by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Zirilli also advanced in Flight C with a first round win over Elena Roca of Southern Miss, 6-1, 6-4, before dropping her second round match.
Next on the schedule for the Blue Raiders is the ITA Ohio Valley Regional at the Adams Tennis Complex on Oct. 12-16. As always, admission is free to all MT tennis events at the ATC.
