STATESBORO, Ga. – The Middle Tennessee softball team continued its great showing at the Eagle Round Robin on Saturday, besting Tennessee Tech in eight innings. Lexi Cushing hit a walk off two run home run in the bottom of the eighth to give MT a 5-3 win.
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Middle Tennessee softball team continued its great showing at the Eagle Round Robin on Saturday, besting Tennessee Tech in eight innings. Lexi Cushing hit a walk off two run home run in the bottom of the eighth to give MT a 5-3 win.
The Blue Raiders took an early lead on Tennessee Tech, scoring three runs in the first two innings of action.
In the bottom of the first, Payton Grove reached base after being hit by pitch. Following two bunts she found herself on third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Austyn Whaley.
Then in the second, Morgan Harris also took a base after being hit by a pitch. She moved to second on a fielder's choice that put Kristin Uselton on as well. Up next, Keely McGee ripped a stand up double down the right field line to score one. Grove hit a sacrifice fly to score another run.
Tech came back in the top of the fourth to with two solo home runs and had another in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
The Blue Raiders had a shot to win it in the bottom of the seventh. McGee had a leadoff double and with one out MT had the bases loaded but were unable to get one across.
The game went into extra innings where the international tie breaker rule was put into place. The Blue Raiders shut down Tech in the first half of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Cushing absolutely smashed the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a walk off game winner, 5-3.
"I felt it right off the bat, it was kind of low but I think it had enough power behind it- it was going over," said Cushing. "It's indescribable the high I have right now, it was great. I hope I can do it again."

Veronica Westfall, Megan Chocallo and Cori Jennings combined in the circle with Jennings recording the win, moving to 1-1 on the young season. They combined for five strikeouts in eight innings of work.
The Blue Raiders return for the final day of the Eagle Round Robin tomorrow, Sunday Feb. 12 for two games. MT plays Tennessee Tech at 9am and Georgia Southern at 1pm.
