MT at Minnesota, vs. Oregon Match Notes
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis will look to put an end to a three-game skid this weekend when they take on Minnesota and Oregon in Minneapolis, starting with a match against the Golden Gophers Friday at 6 p.m.
MT's three-match losing streak started at Wisconsin Feb. 3, followed by a pair of losses by a narrow margin, 4-3, to Western Michigan and Drake. Tom Moonen and Luis Morillo Diaz earned singles victories against Drake on Feb. 12, despite the team loss.
"Those wins were a big confidence boost for [Tom and Luis]," assistant coach Daniel Leitner said. "Luis had a couple of matches go down to the wire that didn't go his way, so it was good for him to pick up a win over a good opponent. Tom has been playing great. He created opportunities and took advantage of them."
Minnesota enters the weekend with a 7-1 record, winning against Western Michigan, Dartmouth and Penn, among others. Recently, the Golden Gophers suffered their first loss of the season by a score of 5-2 to North Carolina State on Feb. 11. Head coach Geoff Young is currently in his 11th season with Minnesota.
Two Golden Gophers are undefeated in singles play so far this season, including George Lovitt with a 5-0 mark, along with Eli Ogilvy at 6-0 this season. Matic Spec holds down the top spot of the Minnesota lineup, where he owns a 5-2 record. The top Golden Gophers doubles combo of Spec and Felix Corwin are undefeated in seven dual matches this season.
MT will stay in Minneapolis to face the Oregon Ducks on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Oregon also owns a 7-1 record entering their match against the Blue Raiders, with wins coming against Rice, Fresno State, Nebraska and Iowa, among others. The Ducks' only loss of the season was against No. 9 Texas at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The win over Fresno State marked head coach Nils Schyllander's 200th win at the helm of the Ducks.
Sophomore Thomas Laurent is currently 17-2 in singles in the 2016-17 season and has won 11 consecutive matches. Ethan Young-Smith moved to 4-0 in singles matches after winning his match at No. 6 against Iowa.
"The guys always enjoy playing schools from the bigger conferences," Leitner added. "Minnesota will be tough at home. They've beaten some good teams, but they've also had close matches with teams that we've already faced, so it's another good test for us. We know Oregon's good, but we haven't seen much from them, so it will be exciting to measure ourselves against them."
