HAMMOND, La. – The Middle Tennessee softball team capped off the Lion Classic II with a 10-2 win over Alcorn State on Sunday, Feb. 19. The Blue Raiders move to 6-3 on the year after going 2-2 on the weekend in Louisiana.
Middle got out to a quick start as Keely McGee slammed a leadoff double to the left field fence. Five walks later and MT was out to a 2-0 lead
The Raiders added two more runs in the top of the second. McGee got on base with a bunt single and back-to-back doubles from Kirstyn Cuccia and Summer Burgess made it 4-0 in favor of Middle.
Alcorn State got on the board in the fourth inning. The Braves got a leadoff single and followed with a two-run home run to left field.
Up by two, the MT offense put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning. McGee got a leadoff walk and scored on another double from Burgess. Three straight walks gave the Raiders a 6-2 lead and in the next at bat Morgan Harris crushed a ball to left center for a RBI single. Deja Portillo ended the game early with a RBI double to the left field fence, making it 10-2 in six innings.
Veronica Westfall was credited with the win in the circle, striking out four with no walks in three innings of work. Pattie Ruth Taylor pitched the other three innings, striking out one and allowing no hits.
Middle returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 21 as the Raiders travel to Clarksville, Tenn. to take on in-state rival Austin Peay at 2pm.
