Raider Softball Headed to South Alabama

Tournament Notes
MOBILE, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee softball team returns to the diamond this weekend for the South Alabama Invitational hosted by South Alabama. The Blue Raiders will play four games in the tournament, the first against Stephen F. Austin on Friday, Feb. 24at 11am. MT will then play Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 9am on Saturday, Feb. 25 and follow by facing the hosts at 2pm. The Raiders will end the weekend with another contest against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 10am.
The Blue Raiders went 2-2 last weekend, picking up wins over Southeast Missouri (8-4) and Alcorn State [10-2 (6)]. The two losses came by just one run as MT fell to UT Arlington (0-1) and Southeastern Louisiana (5-6). The Raiders game with Morehead State was cancelled in the second inning due to heavy rainfall.
Kirstyn Cuccia led the team in batting average for the weekend, hitting .500 and had a .643 on base percentage. She accumulated two doubles, four walks and scored four runs. Keely McGee also hit two doubles on the weekend to go with a home run, four runs scored and three RBI.
In the circle, Cori Jennings went 1-1 recording four strikeouts in 13.1 innings of work. Pattie Ruth Taylor kept her 0.00 ERA intact by pitching 4.1 innings in relief this weekend, striking out one. Veronica Westfall struck out five in four innings in the circle.
Stephen F. Austin comes into the weekend with a struggling 3-9 record. The Ladyjacks three wins came over New Mexico in the Texas A&M tournament last weekend and yesterday against C-USA competitor, Southern Miss. SFA won 5-1 and 3-1 over the Lobos and 5-0 over the Golden Eagles.
SFA has just three players hitting above .300 with only two having played in all 12 games. Amber Landry and Brittany Lewis are batting .324 and .306, respectively. Landry has one double and one home run on the year while Lewis had three doubles and two home runs. Landy has four RBI while Lewis has a team-leading five.
Callee Guffey leads the Ladyjack pitching staff, with a 1.24 ERA in the circle to go with four complete games and 15 strikeouts. Guffey is 2-2 on the year. Jordan Llians has the other SFA win, she is 1-2 with a 4.60 ERA and nine strikeouts.
South Alabama enters the tournament receiving votes in the national polls. The Jaguars have a 9-1 record, losing only to No. 4/5 Alabama, 1-3.
As a team, the Jaguars are batting .299 with three players hitting above .400. MC Nichols leads the team in batting average with a .458 while Kristian Foster is batting .423 with a double and a home run. Amanda Minahan has a team-leading 10 RBI with a double, a triple and two home runs on the year.
In the circle, USA has allowed just six earned runs through 10 games with a team ERA of 0.64, second best in the nation. Devin Brown is 4-1 on the year, holding a 0.57 ERA to go with 53 strikeouts in six appearances, ranking her fifth in the nation. She is also first in the nation in shutouts, with four in five complete games.
Texas A&M Corpus Christi heads into the weekend with a 2-5 record. The Islanders have defeated Texas Tech (2-0) and Texas Southern (1-0).
TAMUCC has struggled at the plate early in the season with no Islanders hitting above .300. Kandace Johnson leads the team in the category with a .278. She has a team-leading two doubles and the lone Islander home run along with recording half of the team RBI with two. Liz Carter has the other two RBI and also has two doubles on the year.
Carter and Johnson are also the Islander pitching staff, combining for a 4.78 ERA. Carter has recorded the two wins in the circle, holding a 2-2 record with 21 strikeouts.
