MOBILE, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee softball team played two games in day two of the South Alabama Invitational Saturday, Feb. 25. The Raiders defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 4-0, and fell to South Alabama, 0-1. Gretchen Greer and Megan Chocallo combined for two great pitching performances in the circle, going 1-1 and striking out six in the two complete games.
Game One – MT 4, TAMUCC 0
The Blue Raiders recorded a season-high 12 hits in the game and had their share of chances to score runs. Through the first four innings of action, MT accumulated half of its hits while stranding nine runners including leaving the bases loaded twice.
MT was finally able to break the scoreless tie in the fifth inning of play. Austyn Whaley hit the ball hard through the legs of the shortstop and outfielders bobbled it, allowing her to slide into second base. Morgan Harris then got aboard by laying down a bunt and beating it out. Keely McGee then followed, laying down a bunt of her own. Whaley headed home on the play and McGee was safe at first, giving MT a 1-0 lead. The Raiders scored two more in the inning on high fly balls to right field. Danielle Munoz hit one that dropped and Kristin Uselton hit the other, a sacrifice fly.
Middle added another run in the sixth as Precious Birdsong got a leadoff infield single, chopping the ball to second base and outpacing it. She then stole second and stole third, where the catcher overthrew the ball, allowing Birdsong to make it 4-0 for MT.
Greer got the complete game win in the circle, improving to 3-0 on the year. She allowed just two hits, while striking out four and walking one.
Offensively, Harris was 3-for-4 at the plate while Munoz hit 2-for-4 with a RBI and Birdsong went 2-for-4 as well. Samantha Vacko had the only extra base hit for the Blue Raiders, recording a double in the fourth inning.
Game Two – MT 0, USA 1
The Raiders and Jaguars went head to head in game two holding each other scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when USA exploited an error by MT to push a run across.
Middle was not without its share of chances in the game. The first was in the third inning as Summer Burgess sent a ball to left field that snuck its way to the fence for a triple.
Then in the fourth inning, Whaley hit a leadoff single to shallow left center. Harris followed by reaching on an error. The duo each moved forward 60 feet as McGee layed down a sac bunt. Up next, Munoz got a drop third strike and as she was running to first, kicked the ball. The umpire ruled that Munoz was safe at first but Whaley, who crossed home on the play, was out as she was the next closest runner to the interference.
Still knotted at zero moving to the sixth, the Jaguars got a one-out single down the left field line and followed with another single to right center field. The Raiders made a throwing error in the infield on the second single, which allowed a run to score, which ended up being the game winner for USA.
Chocallo pitched the complete game, taking the loss (0-1). Her 0.00 ERA stays intact as the run was credited as unearned. She struck out two in the effort.
