Box Score Game 1 | Box Score Game 2
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team dropped both games of the doubleheader on Saturday, March 25. FIU bested the Raiders by scores of 2-1 and 3-0. MT is now 10-17, 1-8 while FIU improves to 30-6, 6-0.
Game One – FIU 2, MT 1
FIU started game one of the doubleheader by loading the bases. A fly ball to center looked to be deep enough for Brianna Dahadue to tag up on third but Precious Birdsong fired a ball to Morgan Harris at the plate to keep the Panthers off the board.
In the top of the second, FIU would again load the bases following two singles to left and a fielder's choice. The Raiders were able to make plays on a line out to Summer Burgess at short and a fly out to Kirstyn Cuccia in right to get out of the jam.
It was the Raiders who struck first in the game as Keely McGee led off the top of the second with a walk. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Danielle Munoz. Kristin Uselton then hit a huge double off the wall in center field to score McGee and give MT a 1-0 lead.
FIU countered in the top of the third as reigning C-USA Player of the Week, Stephanie Texeira, hit a home run over the wall in right field to tie the game at one apiece.
The game remained tied until the top of the fifth. FIU's Jessica Rivera doubled and then scored on a single to left from Jocelin Soto.
The Raiders had a chance to make up ground as they got the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning. Samantha Vacko reached on an infield single while Birdsong reached on a walk and Harris on a hit by pitch. However, MT hit into a fielder's choice to end the rally.
Austyn Whaley got a hit in the sixth but the Raiders were not able to capitalize on it falling to FIU 2-1.
Megan Chocallo pitched the complete game, falling to 0-4 on the year.
Game Two – FIU 3, MT 0
Middle started out game two strongly with Cori Jennings in the circle. She struck out the first two batters she faced.
However, in the top of the second, FIU's meat of the order was able to get a couple of base runners. Julia Gilbert singled up the middle to leadoff and got around to third following a hit by pitch and fielder's choice. Jennings was able to work her way out of the jam by recording her third strikeout.
MT was able to get a runner to third base in the bottom of the second, fourth and fifth but failed to get that last crucial hit to bring the run across and break the scoreless tie.
In the top of the sixth, FIU was able to break that tie. Two quick singles and then a walk loaded the bases. Kasandra Castle then hit a ball to a diving Vacko at second base to drive in two runs. One more came around to score on a double steal to make it 3-0 in favor of the Panthers.
The Raiders got a base runner in the bottom of the seventh but FIU's Shannon Saile recorded her sixth strikeout of the afternoon for the final out of the game.
Jennings took the loss, moving to 5-10 on the season. She surrendered just four hits in the complete game while striking out five.
Harris was 2-for-3 in game two, going 3-for-5 in the doubleheader while Uselton went 2-for-5 recording the lone RBI of the series.
Middle will return to action for a midweek road contest at UT-Martin on Wednesday, March 29 at 4pm. The next conference series is also on the road. The Raiders travel to Ruston, La. to take on LA Tech in a three game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 at 2pm.
