MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's women's tennis suffered a pair of narrow defeats at the Adams Tennis Complex this weekend, as Memphis and VCU edged the Blue Raiders.
Memphis started singles with a 1-0 lead on Friday after winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles. After the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, Lidia Burrows closed the gap with a straight set triumph on court two.
The Tigers retaliated, winning at the bottom of the lineup in straight sets before Costanza Magazzini made the score 3-2 by taking the victory, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. Memphis closed the match with a three-set win at the top of the lineup to make the final score 4-2, in favor of the Tigers.
On Sunday against VCU, the Blue Raiders again found themselves behind 1-0 heading into singles action, as the Rams took doubles wins on courts one and two.
Magazzini tied the match in the early going at 1-1 after her 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 3, but VCU again put themselves out front with a win at the No. 4 spot.
"Costanza's been struggling with her confidence a bit, so to get two wins this weekend is huge for her," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "She's playing well, and hopefully this weekend can set the tone for the rest of the season for her."
A Sarah Sediri straight-set win at No. 6 knotted the match at 2-2. The emotional win on Sunday was the senior's fifth dual match singles win of the 2017 campaign.
"Sarah's another one who's struggled a little bit of late, so for her to come out today and fight the way she did today was good to see," Ramsay added. "She laid it out there on the line for us in singles. That's what we needed all six of our girls to do today, and she led the way."
The match against VCU was tied for a third time after Marta Peris Herrero took the win by a score of 6-3, 6-4 on court five. The Rams claimed the victory on court one in a third set tiebreak to give VCU the 4-3 win.
The Blue Raiders, now 6-11, travel to New Orleans next weekend for matches against Tulane, New Orleans and Conference USA foe LA Tech.
