MT offense had another double-digit hit game
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Blue Raiders swept the mid-week series against (RV) Memphis, defeating the Tigers 11-7 Wednesday night at FedEx Park.
The Blue Raiders (7-6) used a balanced offensive attack and some help from the Tigers (7-5) defense which committed four errors, to extend their winning streak to three games.
The score was tied 4-4 going into the fifth inning, when the Blue Raiders exploded on offense.
The inning started with an Aaron Aucker leadoff walk, followed by a Drew Huff single, to make it first and second, no outs. On the next play, senior slugger Kaleb King, rocketed the go-ahead home run to left center. King's first home run of the year put the Blue Raiders in control, as MT lead 7-4.
MT was not finished in the fifth. Redshirt freshman Devin Conn ripped another single up the middle continuing the Blue Raider attack. Senior catcher Chaz Vesser singled to left, part of his 3-for-4 day, putting runners on first and second for the second time in the frame.
The Blue Raiders used a double steal to advance Conn and Vesser to second and third with one out. Senior Riley Delgado lifted the ball to center field, scoring Conn on a sac fly. Second baseman Kevin Sullivan followed with a slapper to left field, scoring Vesser.
Blue Raiders lead 11-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Tigers attempted to make a comeback, but fell short only scoring three runs in the final three innings.
Cody Puckett (1-0) picked up the win in his first appearance of the year. The southpaw threw four innings, allowing one hit, three walks, while striking out five. Puckett was brought into the game to get out of a jam, with no outs and two runners on.
The senior did his job, getting out of the inning with minimal harm done. After the third frame Puckett never allowed another hit during his time in the game.
Tyler Holcombe came in again to close out the game. Though Holcombe, did not receive credit for the save. The redshirt sophomore transfer is solidifying his spot as the Blue Raider closer, throwing a scoreless ninth to end the game.
Vesser tied a career high with three hits in the game, to go along with tying a career high in runs with three. King finished with a career-high four RBI and his first homer of the year.
Aucker blasted his second homer of the year in third inning, while going 1-for-2 in the game, and three runs. Sullivan went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
The Blue Raiders are on the road again this weekend to play Big 10 foe, Indiana in a three-game series. First pitch set for 5:05 p.m. Friday.
