MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Sarah Sediri was honored before her final home match Sunday morning, and Middle Tennessee split the weekend home stand against Conference USA foes.
"It meant so much to me for all my friends, family, and people that have been here for all four years to come out," Sediri said after the match on Sunday. "This is a sport, but it's more than a sport: it's the friends I've made. These people have changed my life.
"At the end of the day, those girls are beside you when you play, when you run, when you practice early when you don't want to. We're on the right track, and I'm happy for whatever the girls have in their future," Sediri said of her teammates.
MT opened up the final home weekend of the season on Friday against UAB, taking down their second C-USA opponent of the season by a score of 4-1.
The Blazers earned the first point of the match by winning at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, and clinching the doubles point at No. 2, 6-3. Maria Josefina Zehnder and Marta Peris Herrero earned a 6-1 win at No. 3.
In singles play against UAB, Herrero claimed the win at No. 5 after her opponent retired following Herrero's 6-0 first set win. Sediri then quickly won at No. 6 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
"We know what we're getting out of Sarah when we put her out there," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said of his lone senior. "She's going to fight hard, bring good energy, and do the things we ask her to do without hesitation."
After Luisa Zirilli won at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2, Costanza Magazzini clinched the win over the Blazers with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph on court three.
Against Southern Miss on Sunday, the Blue Raiders followed up Senior Day festivities honoring Sediri by taking the doubles point against the Golden Eagles, winning at No. 2 and 3.
Southern Miss got on the board with a win at No. 2 and found themselves with a 3-1 lead as wins on courts one and six gave the Golden Eagles a seemingly comfortable lead.
Zirilli won a thrilling match at No. 4, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), followed by a Magazzini victory at No. 3, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, to tie the match at 3-3. In a third set tiebreak, Southern Miss took the win, making the final score 4-3, in favor of the Golden Eagles.
The Blue Raiders will close out the regular season in Mobile, Alabama, on April 14 at South Alabama and April 15 against Troy. The 2017 C-USA Women's Tennis Championship is scheduled for April 20-23 hosted by North Texas.
"I think we're playing really good tennis at the right time," Ramsay added. "We're playing much better tennis than at the beginning of the season. We just have to believe in ourselves a little bit more."
