MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee travels for a must-win series against UTSA in San Antonio, Texas this weekend.
The Roadrunners lead the overall series 8-3. UTSA defeated MT twice last year in the final series of the year.
The weekend series is crucial for MT's Conference USA tournament chances, as the Blue Raiders are currently on the outside looking in. Middle Tennessee is tied for 10th in the conference, while only the top eight teams make it to the tournament in Biloxi, Miss.
The Blue Raider offense has been the bright spot of the season with six batters hitting .308 or better. The MT offense has improved in nearly every offensive category from a year ago and currently ranks 17th in the country with 481 hits.
MT also ranks tied for 2nd in team batting average (29th in the nation) hitting .303 on the year and 34th in the nation with 90 doubles. For the Blue Raiders to get back into the C-USA tournament race, the pitching staff has to step up this weekend.
Designated hitter Aaron Aucker continues to rip the cover off the ball, as the redshirt junior is batting an impressive.407 this season, good enough for tops in C-USA. Aucker also ranks at the top of the conference in slugging percentage (.761) and on-base percentage (.492). He is currently on a 16-game hit streak, the longest of any Blue Raider since Ryan Stephens in 2013.
Aucker is batting .466 in his 15 games since returning from his hamstring injury.
Seniors Brad Jarreau and Riley Delgado have impressed in their final season in a Blue Raider jersey, hitting .359 and .340 respectively.
Delgado ranks 4th in C-USA (42nd in the nation) with 65 hits this year. Delgado is also the 30th toughest player in the country to strikeout. The Miami, Fla., native is hitting .500 over his last four contests.
JUCO transfer Ryan Kemp continues his strong season, batting .412 last week, including his sixth home run of the year, five of which were in C-USA play.
The weekend rotation will stay the same for the third straight week, with AJ Spencer getting his third Friday night start of the season.
Cody Puckett will get the Saturday start, as the senior has shown to be one of the more consistent pitchers on the Blue Raider staff. The southpaw is fourth on the team with a 4.43 ERA. The lefty has the best ERA amongst the weekend rotation. Puckett is coming off tying his career-high with 10 strikeouts in his last start against Southern Miss.
Sunday is Jake Wyrick, the lefty has struggled during C-USA play. Wyrick was sporting a sub 2.00 ERA for most of the non-conference season. He leads the team in strikeouts with 59.
UTSA is coming off a three-game losing streak, like the Blue Raiders. The Roadrunners took Game One against Rice Friday night before dropping the next two. UTSA also fell to Texas State Tuesday night 11-8.
The Roadrunners are currently the 7-seed in the C-USA Tournament race. The UTSA lineup is led by Ben Brookover who leads the team with a .372 batting average, like MT, the San Antonio lineup has six batters hitting over .300.
First pitch is set for Friday night at 6 p.m.
