Raiders Finish Season Falling at Charlotte
5/7/2017 12:26:00 PM | Softball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Middle Tennessee softball team fell to Charlotte in the final contest of the 2017 season, 3-2. Despite a strong second inning the Raiders could not come back from their own fielding errors. Middle finished the year at 19-30, 6-18 while Charlotte clinched the number seven seed in the conference tournament with the win, ending the regular season with a 29-22, 11-10 record.
With the conclusion of the game, Precious Birdsong finished the season with a batting average of .443, a Middle Tennessee single season record. She bests the top mark set by Courtney Mitchell of .436 in the 2004 season.
The Raiders struck first in the game, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Lexi Cushing led off with double to left center. Then, Kristin Uselton moved Cushing to third on a sacrifice bunt before she was able to score as Samantha Vacko hit a single over the shortstops head. Vacko then came around to score as Deja Portillo hit a single to right followed by Lauren Payne getting the RBI ground out.
The 49ers were able to take the lead in the game in the third, making the most of three Raider errors. With one out, Charlotte got two on following an infield error and a single to left. Then, the 49ers again singled and on an errant throw to first base scored their first run. An overthrow on a steal scored the second run and a Haley Pace single up the middle gave Charlotte the 3-2 lead.
Middle's only other hit of the day was a Precious Birdsong chop single to right field in the third.
Besides the troubling third inning for the Raiders, MT was able to shut down the 49ers in the remaining innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Raiders tried to make a comeback as Danielle Munoz reached on an error with one out. Keely McGee came into pinch run but she made it as far as second base before Middle was retired by Charlotte as they picked up the 3-2 win.
Cori Jennings pitched the complete game, taking the loss to finish at 10-16. She struck out three in the effort.
This game concludes the 2017 season for the Raiders.
