CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team could not recover from a slow start and fell to No. 19 Missouri, 3-0, in the Dunn Center on Friday evening.
Mizzou won the first two sets, 25-7 and 25-13, and then claimed the third, 25-20.
Junior Regan Coughlin paced MT's attack with nine kills to go with four digs. On the defensive side, it was senior Sloan Sullivan and Brienna Tankesley leading the way with five digs as junior Makila York posted six kills and two blocks.
In addition, Freshman Josie Maxim made her second collegiate appearance and accumulated four kills during the matchup.
Mizzou came out strong in the first two sets building identical 13-5 leads. In the first frame, the Tigers did not let the Blue Raiders get any closer than six (8-2) en route to a 25-7 win. Meanwhile, in the second set MT fought back to within nine at 20-11 before Missouri earned a 25-13 victory.
In the final frame, the Panthers took the lead (4-5) for the first time in the match with a kill from redshirt-sophomore Alyssa Mathis before a 5-0 run turned the set into Missouri's favor. However, the Blue Raiders fought back to make it 9-8 behind kills from Mathis, Coughlin, Hammill, and Covington. The Tigers built a 20-16 lead and went on to close the match with a 25-20 win.
QUOTABLE
"The biggest thing (in the third set) is our team is starting to understand what our culture is and they fought back with a next ball mentality, not harping on the play that just happened and focusing on our next play and what do they have to do next". – Head Coach, Chuck Crawford
