MT records First Pre-Season Tournament Sweep in Seven Seasons

MOREHEAD, KY. – Sophomore Dora Peonia produced an efficient offensive outing to lift the Middle Tennessee volleyball team to a, 3-1, victory over Morehead State on Saturday afternoon in the Wetherby Gymnasium. The Blue Raiders swept the competition at the Comfort Innvitational marking their first pre-season tournament win in seven seasons.
"First and foremost, I am really proud of our girls," stated head coach, Chuck Crawford. "They are taking steps to understand how to fight and I feel that our culture, their attitudes, and their accepting of the culture is starting to become us, instead of a concept or idea. I could not be more proud of them".
Peonia paced the Blue Raiders, recording a career-high 18 kills while hitting on a .325 clip as the squad posted a 55-46 edge in kills over the Eagles.
"I feel good about having a great career game but, I didn't do it by myself," said Peonia. "My team was there for me and I felt confident out on the court. Now swinging from the outside, I am getting more comfortable in the position and excited to be helping the team succeed".
Along with her 18 kills, the Castel Bolognese native added eight digs and four service aces on the afternoon. Similarly, junior Makila York tallied 14 kills and two blocks while hitting .417.
Defensively, the Blue Raiders racked up 47 digs as junior Regan Coughlin led the way with 11. Chipping in on defense, sophomore setter Taylor Hammill and sophomore libero Brienna Tankesley combined for 19 digs.
At her setter spot, Hammill recorded a career-high 46 assists while adding four service aces and two kills.
In the first frame, Morehead State built an early lead over the Blue Raiders, 18-12. MT was able to climb back with a late 3-0 run to tie the score at 24-all from back-to-back service aces from freshman Maddie Sweeney. MSU came back in the first frame to take the set in extra points, 27-25, with a kill from Jessie Wachtman.
From there, the Blue Raiders and the Eagles went back-and-forth in the second frame with six lead changes. However, Middle Tennessee responded with a 10-1 run to clinch the second set, 25-21.
After the break, York set the tone for Blue Raiders in the third set recording three straight kills for Middle Tennessee (4-3). The set remained close until a 3-0 MT spurt ended the third frame, 25-20.
In the fourth set, the Blue Raiders vaulted out to a 12-8 lead before the Eagles responded 8-4 run to even the score. However, Middle Tennessee closed the fourth frame with a kill from freshman Josie Maxim to end the set (25-19) and the match 3-1.
Senior Sloan Sullivan and Coughlin were named to the All-Tournament team and Hammill was named the Comfort Inn-vitational MVP.
The Blue Raiders earn a week of rest before heading back on the road to Moon, Pa. to compete in the Robert Morris Invitational on Friday, Sept. 15 and Saturday, Sept. 16.
