MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After two more wins at the Adams Tennis Complex on Saturday against Lipscomb and Murray State, Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team is off to its best start to a season since 2010.
The first match of the day started with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles by Marta Peris Herrero and Maria Josefina Zehnder, followed by a 6-4 win at No. 1 by Kim Kermet and Luisa Zirilli to clinch the doubles point over Lipscomb.
In singles play against the Bisons, Zirilli was first off the courts, winning by a score of 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6, followed by Lidia Burrows at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-1 performance. Kermet clinched the 4-0 sweep of Lipscomb by winning at the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 6-2.
"We know what we're going to get when we send Kim out: she's going to fight. We need to keep getting better, but she's done a great job for us so far like the others have," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said.
MT closed out the day and won its fourth match of the year with a 7-0 sweep over Murray State. Lee Barnard and Zani Barnard kicked the match off by winning 6-1 at the bottom of the doubles lineup, and Herrero and Zehnder cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2 to give MT a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
"Doubles was really sharp this afternoon at all three spots for the first time this season," Ramsay added. "I didn't have much to say. We had really good energy, and we closed sets out. Marta and Josie are a good team; they've got a good thing going, and we're heading in the right direction."
Lee Barnard, Zani Barnard, Zehnder, and Herrero all won their singles matches in straight sets. After Kermet came back to win her match on court four in a match-tiebreak, Costanza Magazzini faced a second set tiebreak and a match-tiebreak but won them both to complete the 7-0 sweep over Lipscomb.
MT will go on the road for the first time this season when they play North Florida and Florida A&M in Jacksonville, Florida, on Jan. 27. The Blue Raiders are one win shy of tying the best start to a season in program history (5-0, twice: 1985 and 2010).
