Blue Raiders Sweep UAB, 3-0

MJRFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (6-15, 1-7) inks its first conference, home and straight-set win in its Friday evening contest to UAB (11-11, 3-5) in the Alumni Memorial Gym.
Senior Bailey Mason controlled the Blue Raider offense, notching 17 kills in the match while hitting on a .400 clip. Meanwhile, senior Regan Coughlin (9) and junior Dora Peonia (7) contributed a combined 16 kills in the contest.
Eight of the nine Blue Raiders on the court this evening recorded kills in the three-set match, including: redshirt-senior Vonnie Covington (5), freshman Emma Grever (2), sophomore Aubrie Huddleston (2), junior Taylor Hammill (1) and junior Brienna Tankesley (1).
Middle Tennessee hit on a .302 clip while holding the Blazer offense to a .126 attack. Similarly, the Blue Raiders created a +15 kill margin (44-29) over UAB.
Meanwhile, Tankesley led the teams backrow, inking 18 digs in the three-set contest to average 6.00 digs per set. Likewise, Coughlin added 10 while Mason contributed 5 digs during Friday's match.
From her setter position, junior Taylor Hammill notched 36 helpers in the contest while registering 8 digs for the Blue Raiders.
Set By Set
In the first frame, the Blue Raiders jumped out to an early 10-4 lead over the Blazers with three kills from Mason and one apiece from Hammill and Peonia. The team continued to dominate the set before UAB created a late 3-0 to tie the frame at 17-all. The set would tie another two times before Middle Tennessee created a small run to take the lead (24-22) before Grever would lay down the kill from the outside for the Blue Raiders to clinch the first frame.
The Blazers would record the first point of the second frame, marking the last time the team would lead the set. The Blue Raiders would go on to build their biggest lead of the set (17-8) with kills from Coughlin and Peonia. UAB battled back within six (20-14) but couldn't get past the Blue Raider defense as Middle Tennessee claimed the second frame over UAB, 25-16.
In the third and final frame, the Blue Raiders hit on a season best .457 clip while recording 18 of its 44 kills in the third set to take third and final frame over UAB, 25-22.
