BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (7-17, 2-8) dropped its Sunday afternoon contest to UAB (13-12, 5-6) in straight-sets in the Bartow Arena.
Senior Regan Coughlin (8) and senior Bailey Mason (7) lead the Middle Tennessee offense in the contest, recording a combined 15 kills in the match. Coughlin also contributed eight digs and a block while Mason added two blocks and a dig.
From her outside hitter position, junior Dora Peonia also added six kills while hitting on a .385 clip. Meanwhile, redshirt-senior Vonnie Covington (5) and freshman Samira Lawson Body (4) contributed a combined nine. Likewise, junior Taylor Hammill and freshman Julia Valdez inked a kill apiece for the Blue Raiders.
Junior libero Brienna Tankesley, paced the Middle Tennessee backrow, registering nine digs in the match to average 3.00 digs per set. Meanwhile Lawson Body (6) and Hammill (4) put together a collective 10 digs in the contest.
Meanwhile from her setter position, Hammill posted 27 helpers in the three-set match while Tankesley added three assists for Middle Tennessee.
The first set went back and forth in the beginning, with the team tying the set five times in the first twelve points of the contest (6-6). The Blue Raiders continued to fight in the frame, notching 12 kills, three aces and two blocks in the set. Middle Tennessee was able to come within two of the Blazers (24-22) but were unable to come any closer as UAB clinched the frame, 25-23.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to a 5-2 lead over the Blazers in the second frame. However, the Blazers created a 4-0 run over Middle Tennessee to take the lead. The Blue Raiders battled back with a kill from Mason to tie the frame at 6-all. UAB created a lead over Middle Tennessee before the Blue Raiders battled back to come within one (23-22) but were unable to get in a momentum, falling the Blazers, 25-23.
In the third and final frame, the Blue Raiders jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the Blazers before UAB tied the set at 3-all. The Blazers created a small lead before back-to-back kills from Mason and another Blue Raider kill by Peonia brought the Blue Raiders within two (14-12). However, that was the closest Middle Tennessee would get in the frame as the Blazers took the frame over the Blue Raiders, 25-16.
Middle Tennessee will return to the Alumni Memorial Gym on Friday, Nov. 2, hosting North Texas at noon.
