MT secures seventh victory at UTEP
The Blue Raiders (7-3, 6-1) remained atop the C-USA East Division standings by one-half game over FIU. They will step out of conference for a date at Kentucky next Saturday before facing West Division leader UAB in the regular-season finale at Floyd Stadium, Nov. 24.
Middle Tennessee put together a crisp offensive output with almost 500 yards total offense, and the defense had three takeaways to lead the all-around team triumph.
Senior quarterback Brent Stockstill continued to add to his legacy as one of the best signal callers in C-USA history with his 17th 300-yard outing which is a school record and fifth most in C-USA history. Stockstill finished the game 31-of-40 for 352 yards and a whopping four touchdowns.
The four touchdowns give Stockstill 98 for his career, which are fourth most all-time in C-USA.
Stellar receiver Ty Lee was on the receiving end of one third of Stockstill's aerials. Lee hauled in 10 passes for 158 yards, both career highs, and he also had a 25-yard touchdown grab. Gatlin Casey had six catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. Zack Dobson and Tavares Thomas also had TD receptions.
Thomas had a two-touchdown performance, adding a rushing score to his receiving TD. Chaton Mobley also ran for a score and led the Blue Raiders in rushing with 44 yards on 12 carries.
Middle Tennessee's defense turned UTEP over three times with Wesley Bush turning in the biggest with his fourth-quarter pick six that all but ended any Miners' upset hopes. Bush stepped in front of a UTEP offering, snagged it from the air and raced 75 yards to paydirt for his second such scoring play of the season. O.J. Johnson also had an interception as well as a forced fumble and a pass break-up. Jahmal Jones had a fumble recovery.
Sophomore Reed Blankenship led the Blue Raiders with nine tackles and Darius Harris added seven.
Middle Tennessee started fast with two first-quarter touchdowns. Thomas hauled in a 13-yard pass from Stockstill and found the end zone for a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. Thomas added his second TD of the quarter less than three minutes later to push the lead to 14-0 with 9:06 remaining in the first stanza.
After UTEP cut into the lead with a TD, Lee hauled in a 25-yard TD pass from Stockstill, who followed that scoring strike with his third of the game when he connected with Zack Dobson for a 18-yard score one possession later to push the lead to 27-7 and seize control of the all-important road win.
Middle Tennessee will step out of conference for a game with Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., next Saturday.
