Owens, Beckner leading the way for MT
Round One Results
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – A pair of Blue Raiders find themselves in the Top 15 at the end of round one of the East Bay Deli Classic, each firing par or better rounds Sunday at Turtle Point Golf Course to lead Middle Tennessee.
Junior Tanner Owens carded a 1-under par 71 in the opening round and currently stands tied for 11th through 18 holes while senior James Beckner's round of even par 72 puts him four spots back in a tie for 15th.
"We got good rounds from Tanner and James, but need the other guys to improve tomorrow so we can move up the leaderboard," Head Coach Mark McEntire said.
Freshman Palmer Sadlowski used a team-high six birdies to salvage an up-and-down round as he stands tied for 45th out of 117 golfers at 4-over par (76).
Middle Tennessee posted 16 birdies on the day, third most in the field, and sat as high as sixth place on the back nine but counted five bogeys to no birdies in the final three holes of the opening round to post a team score of 12-over par 300 that lands the Raiders in a tie for ninth place out of 22 teams.
"I was pleased with the round up until the end," McEntire added. "At the turn I felt like we were in a good place to shoot a solid round on a tough day. We just did not finish well."
The Blue Raiders are just 12 strokes out of third with 36 holes left to play and sit just one stroke back of eighth place Presbyterian. Conference USA foe Florida Atlantic is five strokes behind MT in 13th place.
Freshman Jake Marvelli will lead things off for MT on day two, teeing off at 6:30 a.m. CT on the first tee. He will be followed by Graham Gosselin, Sadlowski, Beckner and Owens.
