MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee hosts long-time rival Murray State Saturday night in the 141st meeting between the two programs, making it tied for the most-played rivalry in Blue Raider basketball history.
The Raiders and Racers meet just three days after Middle Tennessee suffered a loss at in-state foe Vanderbilt while Murray State is coming off a win against Prarie View A&M last Saturday.
Despite being limited to two points in the first half, leading scorer Antonio Green still found a way to finish the contest at Vanderbilt with 18 points, bringing him three shy of the coveted 1,000-point milestone for his career. Reggie Scurry also had a solid night for MT with 14 points and seven rebounds in the losing effort. Green will enter Saturday averaging 19.3 points per game and Scurry averaging just shy of 10.
The Blue Raiders were provided a boost on Tuesday as Darnell Butler Jr. was ruled eligible immediately. Butler saw his first action late in the Vanderbilt game, and could see increased minutes on Saturday and as the season goes on.
Murray State is perhaps best known for their high-scoring point guard, Ja Morant. The sophomore made a name for himself last season with his athleticism, sharp shooting, and accurate passing, and is nearly averaging a triple-double with 27.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 8.4 assists per game.
Senior Shaq Buchanan is often on the other side of those assists and contributes a double-figure scoring average for the Racers as well.
Middle Tennessee has won the last two, three of the last five, and five of the last nine in the storied series against their former OVC rivals.
Tip-off between the Blue Raiders and Racers is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be viewed live on ESPN+.
