Get wins over two top 30 teams
FINAL RESULTS
MURFREESBORO, TN – Once again, the weather was the story in Puerto Rico as conditions made play extremely challenging in the final round. Not a single team managed an under par round for the second straight day and only eight players in the field went under par.
The Blue Raiders carded a final round 300 to finish eighth overall in a field with seven teams ranked among the nation's top 35. MT finished ahead of No. 20 Kentucky and No. 29 Marquette.
The tournament was played at the Rio Mar Ocean Course, a challenging 6,716-yard, par 71.
"Considering that Marcus (Byrd) struggled this week we can't be too upset with our finish," said Head Coach Brennan Webb. "We beat a couple top 30 teams and didn't take any bad losses. Looking forward to getting back home, catching up on some school work and beginning preparation for another tough field in San Diego."
No. 16 Clemson won the tournament at 2-over par, just ahead of defending national champion Oklahoma at 3-over par. Purdue came in third, No. 7 Georgia Tech was fourth and No. 1 Alabama rounded out the top five.
Tyler Johnson led the Blue Raiders by tying for 21st overall with rounds of 69-73-75. Johnson led MT in par 5 scoring for the week at 5-under par which ranked 11th in the field. His 12 birdies also led the Blue Raiders.
James Beckner tied for 26th at 6-over par with 73-72-74. Beckner had seven birdies and 34 pars for the tournament.
Chip Thomas turned in rounds of 76-71-74 to tie for 34th. Thomas' 38 pars led the team and ranked third in the field.
Tanner Owens tied for 38th after posting scores of 71-74-77. Owens, who had one of the team's two eagles, was 3-under par on the par 5s.
Marcus Byrd tied for 61st with rounds of 77-75-77.
Ilari Saulo played in the individual tournament at the River Course and finished 19th with a 233 total.
The Blue Raiders will have off until heading to the Lamkin San Diego Classic on March 12-13.
