Raiders Fall to McNeese on First Day in Florida

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Middle Tennessee softball team fell to McNeese State, 8-5, in the opening day of play at the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational II. The Blue Raiders are now 7-5 on the year.
Last week's C-USA Player of the Week, Lexi Cushing was 3-for-4 in the effort with two RBI, a double and a home run.
The Cowgirls struck first in the contest, taking advantage of walks and then scoring on a fly ball to left.
The Blue Raiders came back with four runs in the top of the third. Jocelynn De La Cruz connected on a double to the fence in left center field to score Summer Burgess and Precious Birdsong. The duo got aboard on an infield single and a walk. De La Cruz then came around to score as Cushing sent a double to left center. Then as a pinch hitter, Dani Munoz came up and fired a single down the left field line to score Cushing and give MT a 4-1 lead.
The lead did not last long as the Cowgirls got two back in the bottom half of the inning. Another three walks followed by a single through the right side of the infield put the score at 4-3 in favor of MT.
McNeese took the lead in the fifth, adding two more runs. A leadoff double followed by a single back up the middle tied the game. Then a Blue Raider error and a single back at the pitcher gave McNeese the 5-4 edge.
The Cowgirls scored three more in the sixth on five singles and three obstruction calls.
In the top of the seventh, the Blue Raiders mounted a comeback as Lexi Cushing smashed out her third home run of the season but it was all that would come as MT fell, 8-5.
Gretchen Greer recorded the loss in the circle, her first of the season. Amber Baldwin and Pattie Ruth Taylor also saw time in the circle. Baldwin struck out two.

The Blue Raiders return to the diamond tomorrow for day two of the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational II. MT is set to take on EMU at 11am EST/12pm CST and then Kent State at 4pm EST/5pm CST.
