MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – For the second time this weekend, Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team swept their opponent at the Adams Tennis Complex, with Tulane falling to the Blue Raiders on Sunday.
"Everybody stepped up, and everybody knew they were going to have to step up," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said after the 4-0 win. "That's been one of our strengths all year: we're deep, and we don't feel like if we have to take somebody out of the lineup that we're losing much. We knew from the beginning, and now it's to our advantage."
Lee Barnard and Zani Barnard opened up the match with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, and Marta Peris Herrero paired with Costanza Magazzini to clinch the first point in the match by a score of 6-1 at No. 3. Luisa Zirilli and Maria Josefina Zehnder were tied with their opponents at No. 1, 3-3, but were unable to finish their match.
"To have that point on the board while you start your singles is a great way to start, and I thought we did an excellent job in doubles today getting out on breaks," Ramsay added. "The girls were locked in and ready to go from the get-go."
Zehnder made quick work of her opponent at the top spot in the singles lineup, winning with a score of 6-1, 6-0. Zani Barnard was next to finish at No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-3 win. Lidia Burrows clinched the 4-0 sweep over Tulane by winning in straight sets at No. 3, 7-5, 6-3.
"We knew this was going to be a tough match, so we came with the mindset that we really wanted to win this match against a team that we lost to last year," Zehnder said. "Following what Charlie and [assistant coach] Olaya [Garrido Rivas] say all the time, staying aggressive and positive, those are the main keys to being successful in singles and doubles."
The Blue Raiders will start a five-match road swing on Sunday when they take on Brown in a neutral site match in Fort Worth, Texas, before a rematch from last year's Conference USA Tournament with North Texas, which is slated for March 7.
