FORT WORTH, Texas – Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team came into the dual match season knowing it had a plethora of depth in the singles lineup, and that was proven in today's 4-3 win over Brown in a neutral site contest.
The Bears took the first point in the match by winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles, both by a score of 6-3. Kim Kermet and Luisa Zirilli were knotted at 5-all in their match at No. 1 but were unable to finish. Sunday's match marks the first time this season the Blue Raiders have won a match despite dropping the doubles point.
"I'm so happy for the girls for getting the win today. It was a team win," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "We didn't play particularly well in doubles and responded with six girls fighting like crazy in singles."
Zani Barnard tied the match at one point apiece when she won at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2, but the Bears regained the lead with a straight-set win at No. 2. Kermet followed with a straight-set triumph of her own to make the score even again.
After Brown took a 3-2 thanks to a victory at the top of the lineup, Lidia Burrows took her match in three sets to tie the score for the final time. Lee Barnard dropped her first set in a tiebreak, but the freshman clinched the MT win over Brown in comeback style, winning the second and third sets on court six.
"I'm also happy for Lee that she was able to clinch," Ramsay added. "I know that's a great feeling, and her teammates really helped her every step of the way. It was a great day, and we're excited to start preparing for North Texas."
The Blue Raiders now have four matches remaining on the road swing, and they'll stay in the Lonestar State for a showdown with Conference USA foe North Texas (4-6) on Wednesday.
The match on Wednesday will be a rematch of the first round of last year's C-USA Championships, which was hosted by North Texas. The Mean Green was a five-seed and won over the Blue Raiders, 4-3. Four starters from last year's team returned to this year's squad, including Maria Kononova, who is currently ranked No. 66 in singles by the ITA.
